A shocking amount of plastic ends up in waterways and, ultimately, the ocean. In waterways where plastic waste tends to accumulate, plastic items are still in good enough shape that they could actually be recycled. Look, often times marine debris is indirectly generated in a city hundreds of miles from the ocean. When someone litters on the street or parking lot, rainwater can move the trash into storm drains that empty into stream and rivers.

In late February, U-Turn volunteers or as we call them "Ocean Heroes", collected about 500kg of plastic trash from a rivershore that would otherise ended up in the ocean. Great initiative...more to follow...thumbs up!
